Raritan Hazelnut Cultivar - 1 year old, bare root - Spring Ship
Raritan is a patented (USPP #32,460 P2) release from Rutgers University and is named after the river Rutgers is founded upon. Raritan is one of Dr. Melnars favorite tree.
Raritan has a very upright tall growth habit with trees up to 20 feet at 15 years of age. The kernels average 1.14 grams and blanch well. In New Jersey the nuts fall in the second half of September. Raritan have a very high level of resistance in NJ, where disease pressure is high.
Good for the commercial blanched market in zones 6b/7a. Make sure your USDA zone is 6b or warmer. As Raritan and The Beast are larger European genetics you will want them on a final spacing of 16ft. in row and 18 to 20ft between rows.
For further detail on Raritan you can read Dr. Molnars post here.
Trees are tissue cultured and can range from 5" to 20" tall. Please follow planting instructions. Please see our Blog page on cultivar information to learn more Here.
We typically ship late-April to late-May weather dependent, dormant and bare root. We cannot ship to the west coast states, or where quarantines exist.
We will be shipping to Canada this year.
Reminder a "cultivar" is a clone of the parent tree and performs just like the parent as it is the one and same genetics. Whereas "seedlings" are just like children, it inherits traits from both parents and what traits are expressed we learn as it matures.
